Welcome to the HILDA NEILY Gallery
Hilda Neily and Rob Longley started painting with Henry Hensche at The Cape School in Provincetown in the early 1970's. Hensche started The Cape School in 1933, carrying on and developing the ideas of his teacher, Charles Hawthorne, who started the first art school in Provincetown. It was Hawthorne's school that led to Provincetown becoming one of America's preeminent art communities.
Neily and Longley each worked intensely with Hensche for over a decade, maintaining a close relationship with Hensche and each other even after they had stopped
attending daily classes. Now, after more than thirty-five years, they continue
to paint and teach in this important tradition. There are no other artists in
Provincetown who have their combination of lengthy study with Hensche and
continuous painting and teaching in this tradition in
Provincetown.
Their lengthy relationship as artists has been very beneficial to Neily and Longley. Hilda and Rob maintain very distinct artistic identities, yet the trust and
respect that they have for each other, along with their shared artistic
heritage, allows them to work and show together in a way that emphasizes their
unique visions as artists.
“I see Hilda Neily as one of the true Impressionists,” says Longley. “Her ability to
look at almost anything and turn it into a beautiful, light-filled, colorful
painting is a talent that I truly admire.”
Of Rob Longley, Neily says,”Longley is a brilliant painter.Through his careful study of light and color, he has achieved the ability to bring to each of his paintings both the true excitement and peaceful beauty of the natural world. Each painting brings the viewer an experience of a moment in time and place”
Hilda
and Rob invite you to explore and enjoy these paintings that are a part of a
